James Parker’s How Heavy Metal Is Keeping Us Sane explores the unsung value of heavy metal music. For my part, I began listening to High on Fire a month or so ago (Metallica has been my mainstay over the years and, more recently, Mastodon has entered the mix). “Blessed Black Wings” is a particularly stunning composition, its obvious thematic echoes of “Master of Puppets” maintaining a lineage of heavy metal’s unrelenting grappling with the darker aspects of our lives.
And while we’re at it, here’s “Rumors of War.”
